Cheryl Ladd is an iconic actress. At age 69, like so many of us in the Not Old Better Show audience, she’s not done dreaming and doing.  Cheryl Ladd tells us today she feels unstoppable and is on a personal mission to empower others to age with optimism. When she learned she had cataracts, she felt afraid that, even after surgery, her vision would never be what it once was. Cheryl will tell us about that and how she knew she had to seize the opportunity to get the best vision she could, so she asked her doctor a new cataract technology in the US, that enhances your vision without glasses or contacts. Today, she has clear and complete vision and is optimistic about all she can do now. She is currently planning for the October release of Christmas Unwrapped on Lifetime. She is staying optimistic as she isolating at home, keeping her mind and body healthy with a Sunday ritual to meet her daughter for virtual Pilates and spending time outdoors to stay inspired.

Every time activists march down Pennsylvania Avenue, protest in Lafayette Square in Washington DC, or carry a sign to the White House, they are literally walking in the footsteps of the suffragists. Even the Black Lives Matter mural on 16th Street uses one of their tactics: Get your message right in the president’s face, where he can’t pretend to ignore it.

Over 100 years ago, the suffragists knew how to exploit news coverage, recruit allies, and make a message go viral. And it worked: Starting with absolutely no power, they affected the single largest change to American democracy.

Did you know that athlete Mildred BABE Zaharias worked as a seamstress, and an insurance company, but She Persisted, and later won gold medals at the 1932 Olympics? Did you know that Wilma Rudolph, who was born prematurely, survived pneumonia, scarlet fever, polio, wore a leg brace, but she persisted, and still won gold in the 100, 200, 4X100 relay in the 1960 Olympics? And, did you know that many young girls look up to Mia Hamm, but Mia had no soccer role models, but she persisted and later won the women’s soccer World Cup?

Our guest today is Chelsea Clinton, who has made it her mission to inspire young women and people through her book series, “She Persisted,” about notable women. Chelsea’s newest book, which we’ll be chatting about, in her series, is titled “She Persisted in Sports. American Olympians Who Changed the Game,” and it features great stories of female athletes like tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, Gold Medal gymnast Simone Biles, two time World Cup winner Mia Hamm, and many others.

Chelsea Clinton and I chat about her inspiration for her new book, her perspective on Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the nomination of RBG that changed the court, her family, and much more.

Nathan Raab, the preeminent American dealer in rare documents, is contacted by at least 20 people every day looking to sell historical documents and artifacts. He constantly combs through other dealers’ catalogs and examines lots offered by the top auction houses. Forgeries are common and spotting them is an art in itself, but Nathan Raab’s work transcends the documents and pieces of paper and gets at the heart of what’s been written and by whom. It’s important to work, and it’s the Hunt for History.

That of course is our guest today, Nathan Raab, reading from his excellent new book, The Hunt for History. We’ll be talking to Nathan Raab about much more, including what his business is like day to day, the fascinating story of how he learned to tell the difference between real and forged artifacts, and of many amazing finds that were nearly lost to the ages. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Series, our guest today is historian Ralph Nurnberger. This will be an excellent interview on a subject very much on our minds: Presidential Elections, as well as the Veeps they choose and why. Ralph Nurnberger will be presenting 3 different Smithsonian Associates events, all of which we’ll have links to in our show notes.

The United States has held 57 presidential elections since the first in 1789. Voters are invariably informed that the current one is “the most important ever,” but some elections have proven more significant and historic than others. These led to landmark political changes, including a Constitutional amendment, the dissolution of major political parties, or changes in national policies—including those that altered civil rights for decades to come. Several elections had contested results in which the winner remained in doubt weeks after the ballots were counted. As the 2020 presidential election approaches, historian Ralph Nurnberger looks back on controversial elections under myriad election rules of the day involving electors who cast two indistinguishable ballots. It took 36 votes in the House of Representatives before a winner was declared the winner.

We’re talking today about Vice Presidents, too. Over the years, presidential nominees’ choices of a running mate have reflected everything from an afterthought to a carefully calculated balancing act. While the vice president's duties are spelled out in the Constitution, how they are selected and deployed in the campaign and office seems to change with every election. 

This is fascinating stuff, and right on time for our 2020 Vote.
