As part of our Inside Science interview series, our guest today is Dr. Eliseo Perez-Stable.

Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D. is Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He oversees the Institute's appropriated budget of $335.8 million to advance the science of minority health and health disparities. Under this framework, the Institute conducts and supports research programs to advance knowledge and understanding of mechanisms to improve minority health, identifies and understands health disparities, and develops effective interventions to reduce these disparities in the community and clinical settings.

Recently, the National Institutes of Health has awarded nearly $234 million to improve COVID-19 testing for underserved and vulnerable populations. A part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative, the RADx Underserved Populations (RADx-UP). The program will support 32 institutions across the United States and will focus on populations disproportionately affected by the pandemic. These groups include African Americans, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Latinos/Latinas, Native Hawaiians, older adults, pregnant women, and those who are homeless or incarcerated.

Dr. Perez Estable will tell us why it is critical that all Americans have access to rapid, accurate diagnostics for COVID-19, especially underserved and vulnerable populations who are bearing the brunt of this disease. And why the funds from the new program will help us better understand and alleviate the barriers to testing for those most vulnerable and reduce the burden of this disease.

Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it’s another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We’ll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo.

On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. We all know that exercise is important, especially for our physical and mental health. Returning to exercise after an illness is often a very tough battle, and during our COVID 19 quarantine period, when we’ve cooped up, without our gyms, we need to be mindful of easing ourselves back into exercise again, particularly after the current Coronavirus outbreak.

COVID-19 has dramatically altered the landscape of exercise. Throughout this time, Sabrena Jo and the American Council on Exercise team has been hard at work to ensure that gyms, certified exercise professionals and health coaches, and the public are equipped with timely information to stay safe and adjust to this new normal.

Since gyms were forced to close back in March, many gyms have been running free classes via their web sites, doing creative programs, and all sorts of new, innovative ways to keep their community engaged. How’s this working…we’ll be talking to Sabrena Jo about that and more.

Stephanie Wittels Wachs is a voice actress, activist, and author. She is the Co-founder and Executive Director of the theatre company Rec Room Arts in Houston, Texas, and the Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of the podcast network Lemonada Media. Stephanie Wittels Wachs also serves as the host of the podcast Last Day.

We’ll be talking to Stephanie Wittels Wachs about the new season of Last Day, Season 2. Season 2 of ‘Last Day’ is focused on the epidemic of suicide. This is a subject we often ‘sweep under the rug,’ stigmatized behavior, and sometimes it’s easier to forget this subject or individual who’s not here.

Season 2 of ‘Last Day’ delves into the growing suicide rate, telling real stories, talking to experts, and asking everyone along the way, “How did we get here, and what could we have done differently?”

As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author interview series, our guest today is Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones. Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones is an emeritus professor of history at the University of Edinburgh. His book The Nazi Spy Ring in America is the subject of our conversation today, and his upcoming Smithsonian Associates presentation, Nov. 18. In the mid-1930s just as the United States was embarking on a policy of neutrality, Nazi Germany launched a program of espionage against the unwary nation. Hitler attempted to interfere in American affairs by spreading anti-Semitic propaganda, stealing military technology, and mapping U.S. defenses.

In a fascinating illustrated presentation, historian Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones offers insights into the role of espionage in shaping American perceptions of Germany in the years leading up to the country’s entry into World War II and sheds light on a significant episode in the history of international relations and the development of the FBI.

Using recently declassified documents, Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones tells us how Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the Abwehr, was able to steal top-secret American technology, such as a prototype codebreaking machine and data about the latest fighter planes.

Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones also gives us a special glimpse into Leon Turrou, the FBI agent who helped bring down the Nazi spy ring in a case that quickly transformed into a national sensation. The arrest and prosecution of four members of the ring was a high-profile case with all the trappings of fiction: fast cars, louche liaisons, a murder plot, a Manhattan socialite, and a ringleader codenamed Agent Sex. This is a fascinating, previously unheard story.
