Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  I’m Paul Vogelzang, and this is the Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author interview series.  Our guest today is Dr. Steven Emmanuel.

Dr. Steven Emmanuel is the dean of the Susan S. Goode School of Arts and Humanities at Virginia Wesleyan University. Dr. Emmanuel will be presenting via Zoom on May 25, 2021, and the title of Dr. Emmanuel’s presentation is How Much is Enough?  Buddhist and Western Perspectives on Greed, Prosperity and Happiness.

It has become fashionable in recent decades to assert that greed is good—or more accurately, that greed can be a productive force for good. This is not a new idea: As early as the 18th century, philosophers such as Adam Smith noted that vices such as avarice and vanity contributed to the advancement of society by spurring industry and prosperity.

At the same time, Smith was deeply aware of the social and psychological costs of a competitive market system—not least anxiety, inauthenticity, inequality, and indifference to the misery of the poor. He frequently observed how the relentless pursuit of wealth disrupts the tranquility and contentment necessary to human happiness.
Modern critics of free-market capitalism have long complained that it promotes economic growth at the expense of virtue and happiness. But does the capitalist model for alleviating poverty force us to choose between the useful and the good? Is some measure of unhappiness simply the price we pay for human progress?

Though it may seem an unlikely source, the Buddhist tradition offers us a useful conceptual framework for thinking about this question.  Our guest today, Steven M. Emmanuel, dean of the Susan S. Goode School of Arts and Humanities at Virginia Wesleyan University will answer our questions about whether there is value in greed, the dangers of wealth acquisition as it pertains to happiness, and an ennobling form of economic activity that is not only compatible with moral and spiritual growth, but promotes the conditions for a peaceful, prosperous, and happy society.

Dr. Gene Kritsky is the dean of Behavioral and Natural Sciences and is a professor in the Department of Biology at Mount St. Joseph University. Additionally, Dr. Gene Kritsky is an entomologist who has authored or edited 10 books and over 250 papers on subjects as diverse as entomology, egyptology, evolution, history of science, dinosaur biology, insect poetry, and insect mythology. Dr. Kritsky’s most recent book, The Periodical Cicadas: The Brood X Edition was published in 2021.  And, now, Dr. Kritsky and his Mount St. Joseph IT team have introduced a fantastic new app to track the cicada for citizen science research, called ‘Cicada Safari.’

At this very instant, in backyards and forests across the eastern U.S., one of nature’s greatest spectacles is underway. Every seventeen years, millions of cicadas rise from the soil of the eastern United States to fly, mate, and fill the air with their noisy song. Although it may lack the epic majesty of the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti or the serene beauty of cherry blossom season in Japan, this event is no less awe-inspiring. I’m talking about the emergence of the Brood X cicadas.  Be aware as you’re mowing your lawn, outside on a hike, listening to the trees rustle, and please use the Cicada Safari app to help with the tracking and mapping of these amazing insects!

William McRaven The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Author Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show.&nbsp; I’m Paul Vogelzang.&nbsp; As part of our  author interview series, today’s guest is Admiral William McRaven.&nbsp;  &nbsp; It’s been ten years since  launched the successful Operation Neptune Spear, the May 2011 raid against Osama bin Laden.&nbsp; And to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Operation Neptune Spear, we’re talking today with Admiral William McRaven. In December 2011, McRaven was runner-up for Time Person of the Year for his role in the operation.&nbsp; To us, he is a hero, but as a young boy growing up in Texas, Bill McRaven only dreamed of being a superhero. McRaven longed to put on a cape and use his superpowers to save the Earth from destruction. But as he grew older and traveled the world, he found real heroes everywhere he went—and none of them had superpowers, much less capes or cowls. But each possessed qualities that gave them the power to help others, to make a difference, to save the world: courage, both physical and moral; humility; a willingness to sacrifice; and a deep sense of integrity. Turns out, the hero code is not a cipher, a puzzle, or a secret message. It is a code of conduct; lessons in virtues that can become the foundations of our character as we build a life worthy of honor and respect, and duty. That, of course, is our guest today, Admiral William McRaven, reading from his new book, .&nbsp; Join me and Admiral McRaven, U.S. Navy (Ret.), about what it means to be a hero, duty, perseverance, lessons learned from the raid on bin Laden, his recollection of the moment when the ground force commander called out, "For God and Country. Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  I’m Paul Vogelzang and today’s show is an exciting historical story about astronaut John Glenn, President John F. Kennedy, and the battleground of the Cold War.  As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author interview series, our guest today is Jeff Shesol.  Jeff Shesol is the author of the new book, titled Mercury Rising: John Glenn, John Kennedy, and the New Battleground of the Cold War. At the height of the Cold War, President John F. Kennedy saw outer space exploration as a race for survival—and one that America was losing. The Soviets seemed unstoppable in space. They had sent the first satellite into orbit, the first animal into orbit, and then, in 1961, the first man. The military implications were clear: The United States needed to catch up.

 When John Glenn blasted off aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, he carried America’s hopes into orbit—and into a new and perilous Cold War battleground. He was perfectly suited to his mission. Though other astronauts called him “the Boy Scout,” they saw his ambition, his drive, and his fierceness of purpose. Glenn’s historic flight did not in itself win the space race, but it did shift the momentum by putting the United States on the path to the moon. Drawing on his new book, Mercury Rising, author Jeff Shesol examines how the astronaut’s heroics lifted the nation’s hopes in what Kennedy called the “hour of maximum danger.”

David A. Andelman is a veteran foreign correspondent for CNN News, author and commentator who contributes frequently to CNN on global affairs. A member of the Board of Contributors of USA Today, David Andelman served for more than seven years as Editor & Publisher of World Policy Journal. David Andelman was executive editor of Forbes.com; a domestic and foreign correspondent for The New York Times in New York, Southeast Asia bureau chief, based in Bangkok, and East European bureau chief, based in Belgrade. David Andelman then moved to CBS News where he served for seven years as Paris correspondent. Andelman followed as a Washington correspondent for CNBC, news editor of Bloomberg News and Business Editor of the New York Daily News. In the course of his career he has traveled through and reported from more than 85 countries.
  

Interestingly, David A. Andelman has joined the Center on National Security as a visiting scholar and director of its Red Lines Project.  The project’s conception arose from President Barack Obama’s failure to enforce a red line in Syria when the dictator Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people, killing more than 1,400. Obama’s cabinet disagreed strongly with his decision to walk away from the red line without military action to remove al-Assad from power. 

David Andelman has that mindset, as does the Red Lines Project, as we try to better understand this very important global security issue, we need to do so right now.

This will be a fascinating interview and we’ll talk about the Red Lines Project, cyber-security, the world in a post pandemic state, Biden, Putin and heart health.  You’ll love this interview.

The Benefits of Video Games for Older Adults

I think you’ll enjoy today’s show as we’re talking about gaming, video games specifically.  When you think of a "gamer," you probably don't think of a 65-year-old man or woman spending their afternoon on the Wii, or PS 2, or X Box, or Nintendo Switch. But think again — an estimated 21% of people who play video games are over the age of 50. What’s more, it turns out that some of those older "gamers" are reaping very significant health benefits as a result.

Here are just some of the social, cognitive, and physical benefits that video games and virtual reality (VR) have to offer seniors.
1. BETTER EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. Whether it's going for a walk, meeting friends for lunch, or seeing a movie, doing anything you enjoy improves emotional health. So it's no surprise many seniors who enjoy playing video games find themselves in better moods.  A study of 140 seniors over 63 years old concluded that both regular and occasional video gamers reported greater well-being, social functioning, and health than non-gamers. In addition, they reported significantly lower rates of depression among people who play video games than those who don't.
2. IMPROVED BALANCE. Video games can provide physical benefits, too, especially to seniors. Certain games that require physical interaction, like Wii Sports and similar titles, can help seniors improve balance, coordination, and reflexes due to the quick decision-making and action required to play. Some seniors have even reported faster walking speeds as a result of playing video games.  It may not be obvious at first, but improving cognitive skills can translate into improved balance and gait. And while fitness video games like Nintendo Wii and even the newer Nintendo Switch have revolutionized exercise for seniors, virtual reality (VR) is already leaving its mark on physical therapy. 
3. ENHANCED COGNITIVE ABILITY. Video games have the potential to support improvement not only emotionally and physically, but cognitively, as well. In fact, a University of California San Francisco study showed significant improvement in cognitive ability, effectively reversing signs of aging in seniors who played 3D video games.
4. REDUCED RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S  With an estimated 5.5 million seniors suffering from Alzheimer's in the U.S. alone, treatment methods are heavily scrutinized and highly valued. Amazingly, recent research has even demonstrated a link between playing video games and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s.   The study looked at connections between gaming and tissue growth in different areas of the brain — especially the hippocampus, an area associated with memory and Alzheimer’s progression.

What’s worse than losing your life? Losing a few bucks, apparently.

According to research conducted by the American Heart Association, threatening coronary-heart-disease patients with money loss could help motivate them to exercise more, according to new research published in Journal of the American Heart Association. 

Creating financial motivation for healthy behavior isn’t a brand-new concept. Insurance companies, for example, already use financial rewards programs to encourage folks to move more. 

Of course, today’s show is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it’s another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We’ll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo, who’ll join us.
