Dr Brian Rose is a popular return guest on the program and Dr. Brian Rose will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates program June 9, 2021, and the title of Dr. Rose’s Zoom presentation is ‘How Disney Conquered the Entertainment Universe.’

Over the last nine decades, the Walt Disney Company has transformed every facet of the entertainment business. Disney pioneered the creation of feature-length cartoons with Snow White, Bambi, and Pinocchio. “The Wonderful World of Disney” and “The Mickey Mouse Club” captured a huge television viewership and created Disney fans for life. Theme parks that span the globe and Broadway musicals based on Disney films pack in crowds. 

Disney is the owner of the greatest collection of franchise movies (from Stars Wars to Toy Story to The Avengers) under the control of a single studio in Hollywood history. And now the new streaming service Disney+ is challenging Netflix and other established providers.

What are the secrets behind the development of this still-growing powerhouse? Brian Rose, a professor emeritus at Fordham University who has written several books on television history, tells us the remarkable story of creativity and media growth as he answers our questions about how the Walt Disney Company evolved from a small cartoon studio in 1923 to the most powerful force in worldwide entertainment today.

Brad Stone is senior executive editor of global technology at Bloomberg News. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon, which has been translated into over thirty-five languages. He has covered Silicon Valley for more than twenty years and lives in the San Francisco Bay area, and Brad Stone is here with us today.

From the National Institutes of Health Research, Dr. CYK Williams and his team in the UK reviewed several studies on the subjects of how best to overcome the risks associated with isolation and loneliness, using laughter.  Laughter Therapy has been around for a while, but a new review of the research by Dr. Williams indicates more effective use.

I’m Paul Vogelzang and as part of our Smithsonian Associates  Art of Living Interview Series,  our returning guest is Marc Lapadula.  Joining me again today is Yale University film professor Marc Lapadula, and we’ll dive into some remarkable examples of cinematic mastery that reflect technical innovation and complex thematic construction.  Marc Lapadula will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates July 19, and the title of his Zoom presentation is How To Watch Movies like a Film Professor.

Great film directors all have one thing in common—lofty artistic ambitions. They take on the toughest issues and most provocative social themes of their day hoping to eloquently bring them to life on screen. Utilizing the movie screen the same way great artists gaze upon their canvases, cinema artists know that every inch of the frame offers a crucial opportunity to leave audiences spellbound by their handiwork.

The most challenging directors disguise their bold artistic intentions behind the mask of easily accessible genre forms, often burying something quite profound beneath a story’s glossy surface. This sort of subtext and the prospect of unraveling a hidden encoded message in the fabric of the film’s narrative is what drives some movie lovers (and film professors) to attempt to decipher what is really going on beneath the scenes playing out before our eyes and ears. There is always something mesmerizing to be uncovered in a great film.

Marc Lapadula and I will chat about how he selects films that accomplish their missions by creating some of the most memorable and timeless moments and performances ever captured on celluloid. Clips from You Only Live Once, Sullivan's Travels, Touch of Evil, On the Waterfront, The Night of the Hunter, Rebel Without a Cause, Birdman, and other films will be discussed today.

I think you’ll enjoy today’s show as we’re talking about gaming, video games specifically.  When you think of a "gamer," you probably don't think of a 65-year-old man or woman spending their afternoon on the Wii, or PS 2, or X Box, or Nintendo Switch. But think again — an estimated 21% of people who play video games are over the age of 50. What’s more, it turns out that some of those older "gamers" are reaping very significant health benefits as a result.

Here are just some of the social, cognitive, and physical benefits that video games and virtual reality (VR) have to offer seniors.
1. BETTER EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. Whether it's going for a walk, meeting friends for lunch, or seeing a movie, doing anything you enjoy improves emotional health. So it's no surprise many seniors who enjoy playing video games find themselves in better moods.  A study of 140 seniors over 63 years old concluded that both regular and occasional video gamers reported greater well-being, social functioning, and health than non-gamers. In addition, they reported significantly lower rates of depression among people who play video games than those who don't.
2. IMPROVED BALANCE. Video games can provide physical benefits, too, especially to seniors. Certain games that require physical interaction, like Wii Sports and similar titles, can help seniors improve balance, coordination, and reflexes due to the quick decision-making and action required to play. Some seniors have even reported faster walking speeds as a result of playing video games.  It may not be obvious at first, but improving cognitive skills can translate into improved balance and gait. And while fitness video games like Nintendo Wii and even the newer Nintendo Switch have revolutionized exercise for seniors, virtual reality (VR) is already leaving its mark on physical therapy. 
3. ENHANCED COGNITIVE ABILITY. Video games have the potential to support improvement not only emotionally and physically, but cognitively, as well. In fact, a University of California San Francisco study showed significant improvement in cognitive ability, effectively reversing signs of aging in seniors who played 3D video games.
4. REDUCED RISK OF ALZHEIMER'S  With an estimated 5.5 million seniors suffering from Alzheimer's in the U.S. alone, treatment methods are heavily scrutinized and highly valued. Amazingly, recent research has even demonstrated a link between playing video games and a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s.   The study looked at connections between gaming and tissue growth in different areas of the brain — especially the hippocampus, an area associated with memory and Alzheimer’s progression.

I’m Paul Vogelzang, and as part of our Smithsonian Associates Art Of Living interview series,  we have an excellent interview with Jenny Ashcraft, who is a genealogist, a researcher, a lover of the written word, and who’ll join us today to talk about family history and resources available at Newspapers.com

Our guest today, Jenny Ashcraft is a family history enthusiast. She works at Ancestry where she writes a blog at Fold3HQ. Jenny Ashcraft loves uncovering stories about ancestors and finds great joy in helping others to do the same. She feels completely at home immersed in dusty archives, pouring through manuscripts, or finding hidden gems in the pages of historic newspapers.

Alex Haley, author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family puts it this way:

"In all of us, there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage—to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning."

According to the Center for Disease Control, only one-third of Americans have gathered their family health history, although 96% of them believe that it is important. Family history is only one of a combination of factors that contribute to chronic diseases; still, not knowing it guarantees guessing where facts could make a difference.

The psychological benefits of genealogy are significant and plentiful: among them are basic needs like acceptance and friendship, ego needs like achievement and status, and self-actualization.

These psychological benefits and more, like knowing your roots boosts older adults mental wellbeing in positive ways, giving us:

a sense of accomplishment, especially if you do the research yourselves;
the perspective that we belong to a family which leaves a legacy for future generations;
a sense of self-worth and belonging to ancestors with whom we can participate to play our part in history;  meaningful things, and of course, as we age
acceptance of the concept of death and mortality.
Older people who have paid attention to our family health history are better able to contribute to their own wellbeing, and better prepared to affect the wellbeing of their descendants.

The grandparents, great-aunts, and great-uncles of our audience here on The Not Old Better Show also have the duty to relate the lessons their ancestors taught, and the moral principles that kept them focused.

What’s worse than losing your life? Losing a few bucks, apparently.

According to research conducted by the American Heart Association, threatening coronary-heart-disease patients with money loss could help motivate them to exercise more, according to new research published in Journal of the American Heart Association. 

Creating financial motivation for healthy behavior isn’t a brand-new concept. Insurance companies, for example, already use financial rewards programs to encourage folks to move more. 

Of course, today’s show is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it’s another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We’ll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo, who’ll join us.
