Mr Awesome (Clarinet Ensemble)

String Ensemble or String Quartet or Clarinet Ensemble

This work is a composer’s reaction to the barbaric tragedy of the Paris bombings that shook the world on November 13, 2015. It was written in the week following the attacks. It is dedicated to the innocent victims of this horrific event.  May compassion, tolerance and human values prevail!

This work was selected for performance at the 2016 KLK International New Music Festival 'Musica Per Archi'.

Adagio For The Fallen (Paris 2015)



Viracocha is the great creator god in the pre-Inca and Inca mythology. According to one Inca myth, Viracocha's first creation was a dark world inhabited by giants, which he had fashioned from stone. These creatures proved disobedient, however, and Viracocha
destroyed them. He may have turned them back to stone, or he may have swept them away in a great flood. Once they were gone, Viracocha made a second race, this time forming people from clay. He equipped them with the clothes, languages, songs, skills, and crops of different nations. Before the people spread out and populated the world, Viracocha ordered them to sink into the earth and to reappear on the surface again from lakes, caves, and hilltops. They did so, and each group of people built a shrine at the spot where they emerged.

This work received 2nd Prize in the Festival Fiati International Composition Competition in Novara Italy in 2012.

This work was selected for performance at the 2016 KLK International New Music Festival 'Bruno Maderna' and was premiered by Phoenix Quartet. Dedicated in memory of Peter Sculthorpe.

1st movement of "An Australian Backyard Suite". This 6-part composition depicts various flora and fauna commonly found in Australian gardens.

The movements are:

Blue Tongue Lizard

Poinciana

This piece received 2nd Prize in the Franz Schubert International Composition Competition in Vienna in 2012.
It was also selected for performance by the Fresh Squeezed Opera Company in 2014.

Piano Trio

This work was commissioned by Kate McKenzie for her mother, 97 years-old Betty. Premiered by Lyrebird Trio at the 2016 Tyalgum Music Festival. Here is another live performance by the same trio with the violinist playing a Stradivarius

This work was commissioned as an education piece, and is
designed to showcase the sections of the orchestra at the circus or at the zoo:
Brass (opening): fanfare, welcome to the circus/zoo;
Woodwinds: the monkeys;
Strings: the trapeze/the swans;
Percussion: lions and tigers;
Tutti, and brass fanfare to end.
The conductor may pause at each new section to introduce the instruments
of the orchestra, or may have the opening few bars of each section of music
played before performing the piece without pause.

The summer solstice come and gone,
now the dark of the moon comes on.
The raging sun in his pale sky
has drunk the sap of the world dry.
Across the plains the dustwhirls run
and dust has choked the shrivelling tree.

This is my world that dies with me, 
cries the curlew in the night.
I have forgotten how the white
 birdfooted water in the creek
used in spring to call and speak.
All is fallen under the sun
and the world dies that once I made.

The strength that brandished my green blade,
the force uncoiling from the cell,
 drains like water from a wrecked well,
 says the dried out corn of the earth.
The seed I cherished finds no birth.

Now the dark of the world comes on.

Making Waves is a monthly series of curated playlists streaming one hour of quality, new composed music.  Founded in 2015, Making Waves shines a spotlight on the music of Australian composers. Fresh playlists are released on the first day of each month and older playlists are made available all year round via our archives; perfect for those with just a few minutes to explore one track or for hours perusing a myriad of diverse sound-worlds.


The project offers wider exposure to emerging composers, their music and the talented performers who champion it. We also provide an easy-to-access platform for listeners to sit back and enjoy a curated hour of exciting new music or explore our living composers more actively.  The playlist themes (and media through which they’re shared eg. Soundcloud, YouTube) evolve each month depending on the content received directly from our talented composers.

At its core Making Waves is a curated listening space. In 2016 we branched into producing our own content through a special project, Making Conversation, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. Making Conversation: Australian Composers Project is a series of podcasts and vodcasts presenting the human side of living Australian composers, released on popular audiovisual and social platforms mid-2017.
Composers Lisa Cheney (Melbourne) and Peggy Polias (Sydney) are curating this project.
