This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

I Advise You Not To Touch Me

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.

It was in the Elvis Costello & the Attractions track "Green Shirt" where I first learned of the name "Quisling."  In looking it up, I learned that Vidkun Quisling was a fascist, a racist and a traitor.  He had worked with Hitler and the Nazi's to ursurp legitimate government control of Norway, and contributed to Germany's occupation of Norway.  

Ironically, that's not what Costello was referencing.  (When touring in the US, Costello noted that there was a medical clinic in Madison, Wisconsin called "Quisling Clinic"--though the clinic had no association with Vidkun Quisling.)  

So infamous was Vidkun Quisling, his name is now synonymous with "traitor" (both as a noun and as a verb.)  

Because we're living in the worst timeline, there are attempts on the far right to "rehabilitate" Quisling, to say that far from being a traitor, Quisling was a hero.  

He was no hero.  Even if you believe he was trying to be a hero, he was an astonishing failure.

Wanted to get all that out of the way, so no one is confused that this Interbay track was somehow elevating Quisling.  It is not.  The samples you hear are all about his trial which lead to his execution.  

This is an interesting track--the first Interbay effort to include three different languages.  A post-war newsreel in German about Quisling's trial up to the verdict.  A newsreel in English covers similar territory.  The Norwegian voices are from the trailer of a movie about Quisling's final days.  

The choice of genre came first.  I love electronic body music and dance industrial sounds, and many of the top bands in those genres are Northern European--and those voices, Nordic and Germanic, seem to have the right tone for this aggressive synthesizer and drum machine driven dance music.  

And that comes with a certain amount of danger for me.  (Actually, I was surprised to learn that a lot of my choices in creating Interbay music every day comes with a remarkable amount of potential danger.)  A very American, white, straight, male, progressive (I mean, I live in Seattle...so, duh...), and media aware music maker...I need to draw a line between my being an admitted tourist, coming from a place of appreciation rather than one of embodying a culture or an experience, and losing control of the narrative and my intentions, whether it being a pale and souless imitation or being so clueless as to make awful mistakes that hurt others or endanger myself or, worse, to provide fuel for bad people to promote their bad thoughts because I wasn't skilled enough or smart enough to make that impossible.  

Yeah.  I overthink all of this.  (...and by "all of this," I MEAN "ALL of this.")  

So, let's strip all of that overthinking out for a second.  This is a driving, aggressive, and nasty retro-inspired electronic dance music track with cool historical samples about an infamous historical figure, not to be celebrated.  

But, don't take MY word for it (though, I SHOULD have a certain amount of credibility here)--go ahead and give "Quisling" by Interbay a listen.  Like it!  Repost it!  Share it!  Comment on it!  Add it to a playlist!  Mow my lawn!  Open my mail!  Tell me that you like my hat!
