Good Enough For You

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.

Yes, I AM aware that this is not how the word "curious" is spelled.  No, there's no particular or meaningful reason why I spelled it this way, other than there simply aren't enough words that start with a Q.  ;)  

Simple.  That was the target for the production of this song.  I came up with the little portamento-flavored lick first and built around it.  The lead line in the verses came rather late in the process, but it seemed like the lacquer that held everything else together and made the whole thing shine.  

(Yes.  I am proud of this one.  I think this will be a candidate for Interbay track of the year.  Of course, whenever I think this way about a track, that track underperforms when it comes to listens and likes.  Please, prove me wrong this time!  :) )  

There's long been a discussion about what the best romantic and slow synth pop song could be.  "Only You" or "Nobody's Diary"?  "Never Never" or "Someone"?  But the dark horse candidate for that title should be "Sexual Healing"--simply because it is a legendary Motown singer behind it, people don't consider it synth pop...but an argument can be made.  

Not that Interbay and Marvin Gaye should ever be referred to in the same breath, but there's a comparison to be made...as this synth pop song has a bit of soul foundation at its heart.  (And I know that you're going to hear a voice that you might think could be Prince--yeah, it could be.  It isn't, but I hear the same thing. ;) )  

What is this song about?  I think there's a relationship that is reaching a make or break moment, and there's some communication problem that might trip them up before they realize that they might actually be perfect for each other--perfectly matched in their flaws and their fears.  

So, the guy is floating a balloon here.  He's curious (or "qurious"--and already, I'm regretting my flippant attitude towards creative spelling) about whether or not they should commit to each other or if they should both recognize that there are probably solid reasons to get out while each of them can...  

Is it romantic?  In a complicated fashion, I think it is.  Raise your hand if you're perfect.  (OK, Saorise...I see you.)  Not many hands...and yet, we all believe that we are all deserving of love.  (Well, maybe not Stephen Miller--exception that proves the rule.)  

The bottom line, when it comes to the pop side of Interbay (which, really should be its own playlist...make a note of that, please!) I think this is a good one.  I think this is credible.  I think this one is worthy of a repost, maybe even a share.  

Of course, I'm a bit biased.  I'll leave it to you--give this a listen and like it, if you do.
