After turning heads with this debut EP for our own naivety sublabel, Hassan Abou Alam is back and more than ready to cement his rep as Cairo’s foremost breakbeat master. This Egyptian lover of all things choppy and rave-y cooks up another epic sonic assault on the ears and subwoofers, designing a crafty and detailed 5-tracker that will not only rattle but stun.

A focused but playful energy runs throughout the entirety of the record, initiating things with the fat beats and the bleep-y bassline of “It Spills”, building towards the X-files atmosphere of ‘Unkindled’ and carrying the vibe on to the B-side for three more cuts of subby, tranced-out alien funk. B-side tracks “Breathe” and “Khamassen” bring on a deeper blend of complex funk patterns, elastic bass and mysterious samples while still moving the dance in the most superlative of ways. Finally, bringing things to sweet culmination, the more rugged and raw beats of final track  “All Used Up” ride along expansive, wide-eyed melodies, resonant acid and a pinch of late 90s surfer-traveller optimism.

For our second mix on the KULTURAL.SKIZOPHRENIA mix series we have Mehdi-J, a young DJ and visual artist from Breda. For this mix he recollects the feeling of standing on the dancefloor, which he missed so sincerely. The mix starts of deep, followed up by heavy bass and breakbeat tunes. Enjoy!

Following a stellar Global Mix from Roy Mills, we’re happy to present a premiere from his EP on his imprint Local Knowledge. ‘Aquatiqué’ is a deep dive into bass heavy territories, as reverberated drums work in tandem with spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm yet powerful club tool.

Roy is at the forefront of his imprint Local Knowledge. Born out of events, radio, and workshops in Naarm/Melbourne, Local Knowledge, helmed by Roy Mills, is focused on community and the dance-floor in equal measures.

Crafting thematic bodies of work within its releases by combining gorgeous visual, aural, and tangible assets, previous releases have featured the likes of LOIF, Nice Girl, Purelink, and more since the first 10” by Hed Ardennes in 2020.

Following a debut on Room II Records, SE London via Naarm/Melbourne artist Roy Mills has appeared on Yushh’s Pressure Dome and Elkka’s femme culture, with his tracks picking up support from esteemed selectors re:ni, Laksa, Simo Cell, Danielle, and Yak amongst others. Now, readying his second full solo release, Roy turns in a set of genre-spanning, sound design heavy cuts, channelling his thrilling take on dance music into three tracks custom-built for different times in the club.

Roy’s track ‘Aquatiqué’ is a gentle, reverberated drum workout as percussion plays off spacious, considered sound design for a comparatively calm but no less club relevant closer to the EP.

Four Four Premiere: Roy Mills - Aquatiqué [Local Knowledge]

We are proud to present our next release, Lemma2! 

As a true lemma it both stands on its own and supports the larger theorem: to explore bass heavy music across a span of tempos and time signatures. Lemma2 goes deeper into the ideas presented in Lemma1, this time drawing inspiration from DnB, Dubstep, and Footwork. The result being a collection of sprawling 160BPM polyrhythmic rollers.

Side A ventures into sound design, mangling field recordings collected on travels far and beyond into almost unrecognizable shapes. Side B takes on a more percussive tip, driving for the dance floor with some stepping d&b-not-d&b business and footwork interpretations.

Originally hailing from the Dutch eastern border, Utrecht-based producer Tala Drum Corps (real name Tijmen Lohmeijer) provides BAKK six tracks where his love for futurism and nostalgia collides. Coming from an adolescence of modern dance, Lohmeijer continually seeks a sense of bodily movement in his work - an elementary scenic approach that stems from an urge to bring imagination into life. Ditching outer ends where club tracks are often approached too seriously or ironic, this mini-album takes on another route that feels mature while simultaneously oozing a child-like joy. 

On Parade, the listener strolls along a shimmering motley landscape.

Slowly slipping away in a crystal vortex via its vocal, ’Clear Fall’ shows the art of juxtaposition when its panning drums propel the track straight against its own gravity. Setting the tone for exploration, ’Refraction-S’ provide calm pace with its crisp gridlocked snares and melodic sonar pulses. Continuing a path of hypnotism, the album takes a deep plunge with ‘Lake Technium’ - whose rolling acid line hints to the essence of rave without obvious tendencies. On the flip side, ‘Frog Marches’ recalls emotions strongly akin to the LP opener, but walking a darker introvert thread. Spacious drum programming flutters around a haunting ambience on ’Sp00n’ - showcasing Lohmeijer’s ability to create intricate ear-worm structures. The producer offers an energetic closure with the break-inspired club tool ‘Modernity (Poisoned)’. 

All in all, Parade makes up a multifaceted play that appreciates sonic aesthetics of the recent past but re-appropriates those in a daring and dreamy context.

100% of proceeds will be donated to Aborigial Legal Services; based in Redfern it is the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Australia, and the first free legal assistance service in the country.
