PROGRAM NOTE
Unlike some of my previous works, Suite for String Orchestra is not inspired by an over-arching programmatic theme. Although there are some technical and motivic relationships between some of the movements—particularly the first and fifth—the movements are generally unrelated and are meant to be noticeably distinct. It is in five short movements and is intentionally written in an “old-fashioned,” somewhat archaic style. I initially played around with the idea of titling this work Old-fashioned Suite or Old Time Suite, but there seems to be a sufficient sprinkling of “new fangled ideas” in this work to make these alternative titles seem inadequate.

The first movement, Allegro vivace, is written in a “mid-20th century American” style. My model for a few of the sections in this movement is the evocative, German phrase Sturm und Drang, which literally translated means “storm and stress.”

In the second movement, Trapped waltz, I imagine an ethereal, yet cognizant waltz floating above the stratosphere, looking for a place to rest, but hobbled and shackled by a pounding rock and roll drumset. I see this as a metaphor for the various dances throughout history that have come and gone but are continually vying for attention in contemporary culture. The movement fades out at the end, as if the waltz is eternally looking for a place to settle down. Admittedly, I was somewhat inspired by the collage works of Charles Ives.

The third movement, Nocturne, begins slowly and sadly, and I imagine the pulse in the beginning as similar to the gentle breathing of someone who is asleep. The middle of the movement is much more intense and violent, and the end is as soft and calm as the beginning. The first chair violin and the first chair violoncello have brief solos in this movement.

Although material from the middle of the fourth movement, Balinese scherzo, is derived from a Balinese scale, the beginning is somewhat chromatic and the ending is essentially based on the E-major scale. This movement is distinctive in that the orchestra is asked to play pizzicato almost the entire time.

The fifth movement, Finale: allegro moderato, is the movement that is most reminiscent of the first movement. The ending combines material from the beginning of both the first and fifth movements.

Music for everyone, music for others. A life against the current. No genre in music! It is too simplistic to give a genre to everything!! Music is an expression of human emotions and it is necessary to learn to understand humanity in its complexity.

Dizzy O'Brian's music encompasses everything from alternative rock to electro and ambient. A classically trained composer and performer, his major influences include classical composers such as Mozart and Beethoven as well as classic rock groups such as The Beatles, The B52s, Yes and Frank Zappa, to name a few.

Auteur-compositeur de chansons françaises qui n'attendent que de bons interprètes. 
Après des études au conservatoire et musicologie à la Sorbonne, j'ai enseigné l'éducation musicale à des élèves en école élémentaire de 1982 à 2021.

Dès 1989, alors que je découvrais la MAO, j'ai commencé à faire des centaines d'arrangements de chansons pour enfants ou adultes dans tous les styles pour les faire chanter. Cette solide expérience m'a amené dans un premier temps à composer des chansons pour mes élèves. Puis, je me suis lancé dans un répertoire pour adultes. 132 chansons à ce jour !

Mon répertoire va de la danse traditionnelle française (La bourrée du maumarié), à l’EDM (La tête dans les étoiles) en passant par la musique classique (Double concerto pour violon, violoncelle et orchestre à cordes) et la chanson française, le gros du panier, avec le plus souvent cette pointe d’humour qui fait tant défaut aujourd’hui dans beaucoup de chansons, (ce qui est étonnant quand on voit autant d’humoristes fleurir aux six points de l’Hexagone…)

Même si certains apprécient ma façon de chanter, mes chansons sont faites pour de vrais interprètes qui aiment monter sur scène.

Author-composer and performer... by default of French songs. 
After studying at the Conservatoire and musicology at the Sorbonne, I taught music education to elementary school pupils from 1982 to 2021.

As early as 1989, when I was just discovering computer-assisted music, I started making hundreds of arrangements of songs for children and adults in all styles, to get them to sing along. This solid experience initially led me to compose songs for my students. Then I started working on a repertoire for adults. 132 songs to date!

My repertoire ranges from traditional French dance (La bourrée du maumarié), to EDM (La tête dans les étoiles), classical music (Double concerto for violin, cello and string orchestra) and French chanson, the mainstay of my repertoire, most often with that touch of humor so lacking in so many songs these days (which is astonishing when you see so many humorists flourishing at the six points of the Hexagon...).

Even if some people like the way I sing, my songs are made for real performers who like to get up on stage.

My name is Rich Davis, a musician and composer from Lincolnshire in England. I am primarily a pianist but also play electronic keyboards and enjoy singing. I have played the piano since the age of 12  when I first started having lessons.  Over the past few years I have been entertaining elderly residents in care homes, providing a mix of classical and easy listening piano with singalong and wartime songs. I have found this really rewarding as it makes such a difference to elderly people to have music in their lives especially those suffering with dementia. More recently I have been composing original piano solo compositions resulting in the completion of my first album called 'Piano Chillout'. I have really enjoyed making this album as all the pieces on it are inspired by personal experiences and life events. I would describe the album as easy listening and  hope it will provide relaxation and comfort to many. Since completing 'Piano Chillout' I have composed a number of new piano solo compositions all based on different themes. One of my most recent pieces 'Flowing Stream' was inspired by the beauty of water running down a mountain side. Prior to that 'Northern Lights' was inspired by the beautiful Aurora Borealis which is totally unique and something I wanted to put into music. The compositions 'Thankyou' and 'Now I Understand' are both piano and vocal tracks with lyrics that are very close to my heart. I hope you enjoy my music.
