GWIM Podcast Season 4

Today we’re talking with Alison Warren, DAOM, MSHS, who teaches students in the health professions – including here at GW – about the practical applications of Integrative Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture.

An adjunct assistant professor in our Integrative Medicine Programs, Dr. Warren received her Clinical Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Bastyr University in Washington state.  She earned a Master’s of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago.  During her training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Warren also traveled to China to train at prestigious hospitals in both Shung-Hai and Chung-Du. 

Dr. Warren also holds a Master of Science in Health Sciences in Integrative Medicine from the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  She recently completed a Neuroscience Certification from the University of Pennsylvania.

Welcome to GW Integrative Medicine – the podcast about disease prevention and health promotion – from the Office of Integrative Medicine and Health at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  Listen in on the conversation Misha Kogan, MD, an Associate Professor of Medicine here at GW and Medical Director of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, had with Aly Cohen, MD, FACR, one of the world’s leading experts on environmental health and the co-author of Non-Toxic: Guide to Living Healthy in a Chemical World.  

Part of the Oxford University Press Weil Integrative Medicine Library, the book is a practical guide to living healthier in our modern environment. Dr. Cohen has collaborated with the Environmental Working Group, Cancer Schmancer, and other disease-prevention organizations, and is coeditor of the textbook, Integrative Environmental Medicine.

Dr. Cohen is tripled board certified in internal medicine, rheumatology, and integrative medicine. She helped create a CME on endocrine disrupting chemicals and their relationship to human health. She lectures nationally on this topic to communities, academic institutions and medical schools.

Living Healthy in a Chemical World

What are entheogenic and psychedelic-assisted therapies?  Why is it rapidly gaining popularity among some health providers?  And what does the science tell us about it?

We take a deep dive into the topic with physician-scientist Sunil K. Aggarwal, MD, PhD, FAAPMR, co-founder and co-director of the Advanced Integrative Medical Science Institute (AIMS) in Seattle, Washington. 

Dr. Aggarwal’s primary clinical and research work is in Palliative Care, Rehabilitation Medicine, medical cannabis care integration, and Psychedelic Integrative Medicine.

Board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, he has served as the Chair of the Integrative Medicine Special Interest Group at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Dr. Aggarwal is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Washington, and a Faculty Member of the National Family Medicine Residency. He is an Associate Member of the New York Academy of Medicine and the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the National Cancer Institute’s PDQ Cancer CAM information summary on cannabis and cannabinoids.

Today on the pod we talk about the gut microbiome and pancreatic health and disease with researcher and clinician Mark Haupt, MD, Chief Medical Officer of IFF Health & Biosciences. IFF Health & Biosciences is a company that conducts extensive R&D activities in the fields of food science, microbiology and molecular biology. For five years prior to IFF,  he joined an early-stage complex genomics and bioinformatics company focused on precision medicine with an initial focus in pancreatic disease. 

Dr. Haupt is a pediatric pulmonologist who has dedicated his career to helping patients with pancreatic disease through his work in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.  His scholarly activities focused on improving nutritional outcomes in children with cystic fibrosis via pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. 

He ultimately transitioned to the pharma/biotech industry where he continued to focus on complex inflammatory syndromes of the digestive tract. He is passionate about improving health through nutrition, personalized medicine and data.

The 2020-2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans dropped over GW's winter break.  

Since the first edition was published in 1980, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans have provided science-based advice on what to eat and drink to promote health, reduce risk of chronic disease, and meet nutrient needs.  Jointly published by U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and of
Health and Human Services (HHS), the guidelines are updated at least every 5 years.   

The questions that immediately come to mind are what's new, what changed, and what do we really need to know?  So let’s get into it with our resident nutrition scientist and GWIM podcast co-host Dr. Leigh Frame!

Botanical Skin Care & COVID-19

Today we’re talking nutrition science with Chef Eric Adjepong, MPH. A finalist on Season 16 of Bravo's Top Chef, he delighted viewers with his passion for the culinary arts and nutrition.

Chef Eric has bachelor’s degrees in Culinary Arts and Culinary Nutrition from Johnson & Wales, one of the country's premiere culinary universities, and Master of Public Health in International Public Health Nutrition from the University of Westminster in London.

Prior to launching Pinch & Plate with his wife Janelle, Chef Eric cooked in several Michelin-starred restaurants in New York.  He has two cookbooks from Penguin Random House coming out in the 2022.  The first, "Sankofa," is a cookbook that details the effects of the slave trade on food in the Southern United States, the Caribbean, and South America. The second one is aimed towards children to teach them about the food of the African diaspora.
