Exactly two years after the release of ΠΟΛΙΣ, Subheim returns with RAEON; a collection of eight new tracks for lonely evenings and long night drives. With RAEON, Subheim continues to expand into the sonic area he has steadily been exploring since 2015’s Foray, the album that marked a conscious shift towards moodier, lo-fi territory. While this new release feels like a natural continuation of the producer’s most recent work, it is also entirely stripped of any percussive elements with the focus being placed on space, ambience and melody. Each composition feels like a distant, fading memory that unfolds faster than you'd expect it to and dissolves into an echoing nothingness before you’re able to hold on to it for more than a few seconds. Much like a long-distance train passing by, the momentary flickering of city lights at night or a song you might hear in your sleep. Every piece functions as a different chapter of the same open-ended narrative; one where stillness, movement, darkness and light simultaneously coexist in harmony. Intentionally imperfect, naturally gritty, spacious as ever, the record balances between fragility and conviction, and once more reveals the deeply human side of its creator. In contrast to some of Subheim's darker material, RAEON is filled with an undertone of bittersweet hopefulness and a strong desire for new life. With the juxtaposition of nostalgic, synthesized, analog sounds and neoclassical elements, this mini-album strikes a near perfect balance between past and future, melancholy and anticipation. And while the closing track is almost ironically called “Forget”, its ending will surely leave you longing for more.

A note from Chris on the EP:

Although somewhat melancholic in their original form, these pieces started out as what I came to think of as sonic meditations. The original scapes (three in total) have appeared in a few live and ambient DJ sets, remaining unaltered, but strangely, there was a dreamy nature to the original recordings that drew me into the idea of developing them further, as they seemed to have a restful sort of quality to them - hence the ep's name!

These revised versions were completed nearly two years after the original recordings, which has allowed the tracks to inherit a small sense of optimism over time, that belies their original tone, possibly found through new associations I had made with them.

They were mixed down extremely late at night when all is quiet, infused with the fuzz and glow of generously driven tubes. So the time seems right now to surrender them in their final form - happy in knowing they are out there somewhere, lovingly cut into the 12 dub plates that will carry them!

The coastal forests of northern NSW are rich in birdlife. This sample was recorded in an area of mixed heath and woodland along the coast north of Coff's Harbour.

It is deep night in the East African bush. A full moon illuminates the savannah, silhouetting ancient baobab tress. 

The air is filled with a rich chorus of nocturnal insects. This choir of small critters create a gentle, pulsating chorus, each insect with its own voice; chiming, ticking, zizzing, humming…

Meanwhile bats flutter overhead, sometimes coming close and audibly echo-locating. Nightjars call mysteriously on the wing, and if you listen carefully, the deep rumbling vocalisations from a family of elephants grazing nearby can occasionally be heard.

This is an ambient and spacious recording, a hypnotic meditation from the African night. 

Andrew comments:

One of our colleagues said we'd love the insect choruses in Africa. He was right - they were rich and mesmerising. Some nights we'd just lie in camp and listen until we drifted off to sleep.

Often we'd leave our microphones out all night. This is one of the most rich and engaging insect choirs we recorded.

Taiga - the great forests of the far north, the most extensive habitat on earth.

Here the landscape is vast; a mosaic of conifer forest and sodden peatbogs, threaded with streams and lakes.

As the blue light of midsummer dawn silhouettes the landscape, Tree Pipits and Willow Warblers sing melodiously from song perches atop tall conifers. Bramblings and small parties of Siskins flit overhead, filling the air with their delicate calls.

Across open ground drift the eerie calls of whimbrels and the sharp piping of a greenshank. Snipe display in flight, and ducks splash-land on open water.

As wind stirs the treetops, a lone redstart sings, its intricate trills fragile against the elements.
