It's always a pleasure to be working with high flying Texas bluesman Tom Adams @tytlblues . Tom is so well known here on SoundCloud because of his ability to play and record blues classics and originals, his prolific work, his fine collaborations with serious musicians, and his spirit in following and sharing other's best music. Almost every day, his followers are treated to pure, authentic blues.  Tom knows the blues, he lives the blues, and he shares the blues.  Damn right he's got the Blues!

I've been fortunate to have played and recorded with Tom, and have organized our recordings together here.   And several other of my very favorite SC guitarists are featured on some of these recordings as well -- Justin Valente and Ian Tait.  Check out all their galleries.  Wonderful musicians.

Who are your musical inspirations and mentors?  It is so important for musicians to have mentors and true inspirations, who have helped shape the music each of us creates and plays.   I've done 8 tributes so far for SoundCloud for some of my very favorites - Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia, Carlos Santana, McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul and even SoundCloud's own Tom Adams.  Several of the tunes here include other fine SC musicians - Joe Bongiovanni on guitar on the Santana and Justin Valente on guitar in our tribute to Tom Adams. We had a blast pulling this together.  Its a simple blues/gospel riff on organ in F, that sets up some wonderful opportunities for heavy jams over the top by Justin and Tom, two of the finest blues players I have ever recorded with.  Tom has the solos with a more treble sound, and Justin boosts his midrange and bass.  Check out their SoundCloud pages if you are not familiar.  They are bad ass, just like this tune. Bad Ass Blues - with Justin Valente and Tom Adams / guitars

What fun pulling this together with three serious musicians.  You probably know Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente's awesome blues oriented guitars, and they stretch out here on this funk / soul / fusion groove.  Burning it up they are.  And joining us on Alto Sax is recording artist Matt Criscuolo.  Look for him at mattcriscuolo.com.  These guys just play their ass off here.  Started with an internet fusion loop, I added many keyboard lines to funk it up to the max, and we added these pros.  Joe takes the opening solos for the first four minutes, Justin follows, and we finish with all the guys trading off.  So much energy.  Positive energy here.  Put this on and relax. Created this tune to combine elements of rock and fusion, and was looking to set up soloing similar to what John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck did with Jan Hammer. Busting Out - with Ronny Heimdal / guitar

How special for me to have been a part of this collaboration with the young and extraordinary Dutch composer/guitarist/keyboard player Rients Draaisma.  While my hope was to create a forum for a call and response type solo between my synth and Rients' soaring creative guitar ala John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rients immediately turned it up several levels to create what we have here.   The head came from a synth solo line of mine that was then adjusted by Rients to meet the intricate and changing meter.  Everything else Rients did - the composition, the most intricate drum tracks, and his very deep soloing.  All  Overnight.  Wow.

It's back to school time for so many and that has students singing the blues! Thought we'd commemorate this time of the year with an electric blues, and asked the superb Tom Adams https://soundcloud.com/tytlblues to join me.   Tom knows I love funk, and when this backing track with my electric guitar solo keyboard patch landed in his email, was probably a little funkier and more electric than his norm.  But damn, check out what he's done to challenge me.  Listening as always, he throws back some serious pitch bends, distortion, and mimics beautifully what I am doing on the synthesizer.  I have the first solo, Tom follows and we're off to the races together.  Thanks for the fun Tom....always a pleasure.

Back To School Blues - with Tom Adams / guitar

Thought I'd throw a quick tune together riding the train out to New York's beautiful Hamptons, and pulled this off with my midi controller and a laptop.  Surprised the people walking by on the train, but what the hell!  Probably the first tune ever recorded on a train:).  Here's a simple I-IV groove in C that just works (they always do:)) Thanks to Joe Cocker for his seminal Feeling Alright.  One of my favorite grooves.  Same type of vibe here.  Seems like the right atmosphere to go into the holiday weekend.  All done on keyboards.  Thanks as always for listening and commenting.  

Smile - Tribute to Joe Cocker

Tom and I came together here to record one of my very favorite Rock tunes, Feeling Alright.  Originally written by Dave Mason and performed by Traffic, the tune was picked up by the great Joe Cocker, performed at Woodstock, and the rest is history.  A great I-IV groove that just brings home emotion.  Tom had recorded this without piano and I immediately jumped in to ask if I could add the defining part (at least for me ).  No vocals here but I threw in the trombone melody to help bring back the proper vibe.  Hopefully the passion comes through with our recording. It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

Created this tune to shed some reflection on the most difficult ongoing and escalating situations that exist in the Middle East. Always exciting for me to have an opportunity to perform and record with Norway's brilliant fusion guitarist, composer and recording engineer Ronny Heimdal https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal .  I started working on this tune late this summer when one of other favorite guitarists Justin Valente https://soundcloud.com/justin-valente sent me a funk track to collaborate on.  6 weeks went by and I was waiting for Justin to add his solos to it.  But I forgot the original track had come from Justin and then asked Ronny to do his thing with the opening and solos, and posted, without giving credit to Justin for setting the groove - or even the original idea.  SO SORRY JUSTIN!  Memory lapse!

With the new tune, Ronnie kicks it into high gear immediately on this funk fusion jam, and just doesn't let up.  Not only is he bringing his A game to make this come alive, but he's also brought his knowledge and ear to create the right sound and balance.  If you are fan of superb guitar, of jazz rock fusion, and of modal pieces, this one's for you   -  Go Ahead Ronny...named after a classic tune Miles Davis did on Big Fun, with John McLaughlin stretching it out over a modal groove....  Perhaps I should rename it So Sorry Justin:)

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. Excited to release Spring Blossom, an original jazz tune with three of the very finest true jazz players on SC.   I have known Alan for a decade, having worked and played with him here in New York.  He's a world class digital marketing professional, superb and highly educated musician, collector of extraordinary guitars, and created the melody here for Spring Blossom.  Santi-Caballero Mendez is a wonderful multi-instrumentalist from Barcelona, and plays saxophones and flute with both ease and taste.  Santi opens the tune up on alto saxophone.   This is my first collaboration with Manuel, who is from the island of Sardinia, Italy.  Manuel is a superb bass player, and performs here on his fretless 6 string - an instrument I am certain Alan would love to get his hands on:).  Despite being born with a handicap to his right hand, Manuel has overcome this hurdle to create and play remarkable jazz and fusion bass lines and music, in addition to drums.  I'm looking forward to doing some very electric fusion tunes with him too, as his understanding of bass and rhythm is simply stunning.  Straordinario.

The funkiest guitar player on SoundCloud is BACK, with this grooving original, Can't Get Enough Of You.  Scotland's finest has teamed up with Germany's super funky slap bass marvel Mirko "Stringburner" Borach, creating what I can only say reminds me of one of the all time greatest tunes, Mountain's Mississippi Queen.  But Mountain never had a rhythm section playing with this much funk!  Ian's letting me do my thing on keyboards, and you can hear me soloing in the right channel, trying to hold my own over this nasty rocking blues.
