Artist: Quadrant Soundscape [Dub Explorations]

For the 13th episode of the Frontier we have decided to step up and present our own interpretation of what the series is. The Frontier is a series that means a lot to us, it's something that we have talked about wanting to do for a long time and have been very careful in how we want to curate it. From the music, to the artwork, and to the artists we've invited on, every decision has been carefully thought about. 

So with that being said we are proud to present our own mix, coming in at just over 2 hours. We feel this is a good representation of our sound and how we like to develop and build things up over the course of a few hours. 

As with all our Frontier mixes we have not included the tracklist. Feel free to comment below and we will let you know what is being played.

The Frontier 013 - Quadrant Soundscape

The Berlin-based DJ and producer has been active under his Alias CLARENCE since 2000. His Sets combine a dynamic mix of Chicago House, Electro and Detroit Techno, in which Clarence constantly explores new musical worlds and adapts the sound perfectly to the party atmosphere.
In this mix he shows his best prctise, so nice he contributed here on my MLD Channel and also for the festival! Thanks a lot for your contribution, Ronny!

Bio/
Upwellings is a Dub-Techno project created by the protean musician Vincent Raude. Cultivating a minimalist approach to techno and a strong affinity for micro-textures, he produces hypnotic music that draws its roots and techniques from Jamaican dub masters. Numerous EPs have been released on various labels since 2008. These productions have earned him the support of artists such as Alexkid, Laurent Garnier, Cio D'or, etc...and he has been working with labels Telrae ), MOSHItaka, Tiefenrausch, Spclnch, Greyscale, Dimensions Recordings for EPs that were very popular in the Dub-Techno's network. Performing exclusively live, from clubs to festivals, from Berlin to Montreal, it is on stage that Upwellings gives its whole meaning to the word "Dub."

Artist: Armin Bender [Greyscale / Ohm Series / Vuo Records / spclnch / Piranha Siberia Dub]

For Our 16th trip around the musical cosmos we welcome to the controls a German artist who we have been a fan of for some time. With Releases on some of the top dub techno labels including , Greyscale, OHM Series and Vuo Records, we are proud to be able to host this mix from Armin Bender.

Armin is an artist who has been involved in the dub techno scene for 30 years, he is a passionate Vinyl collector, DJ and producer. An understated artist who goes about his work in a quiet and professional manner. 

This is summed up in his short but sweet biography - 

"Mind rave, goose bumps, deepness, groove, a smile on the face. Thats what its all about... No more words necessary, no history, no credits, no stereotypes, just the music that I love, preferably on vinyl... Peace!"

We thank Armin for his contribution to the series, its another fantastic mix filled some some audible delights including tracks from Dana Ruh, Pablo Bolivar, Matt & Mark Thibideau as well as the beautiful early track by DJ Sandwich on OGE White. @thelonerist is a UK-based dj/producer who specialises in dub techno and deep electronic soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from the emotive depth of Detroit techno and the atmospheric nuances of dub, Lonerist crafts tracks and dj sets that are both immersive and contemplative and weaves a sonic narrative that blurs the line between isolation and intensity. 

A @thelonerist DJ set is rooted in dub techno, ambient textures, and minimalist rhythms, crafted for introspection as much as movement. Each track is given room to breathe, with long blends and subtle transitions that blur the line between where one ends and the next begins. Expect space, depth and plenty of echo-drenched chords. Perfect for those late-night hours at a warehouse party, or headphones on during a long train ride through rain-soaked cities.

For over 20 years Martin Jarl was something of an anomaly in my record collection. At the turn of the century, I was largely buying records on the likes of Deepchord, Salz, Nurture, Bluetrain & Minus THX. I'd also been following the emergence of some labels pushing the more minimal sound for a couple of years, the likes of Out to Lunch, Playhouse & Raum...musik. After the closure of Atlas in Soho I habitually shopped in Smallfish; and I remember adding Martin's Weetabix EP to the listening pile. Upon hearing it I immediately bought two copies, and for the next two decades considered it one of my 'desert island discs'. 

By 2024 both copies were hammered and full of surface noise, and what started out as a tentative ask for some wav files, turned into an opportunity to re-release a track from one of my favourite records. Frankly I could've gone for any of the four tracks. Whether Martin knew to what extent or not; including a remaster of the title track in last year's V/A compilation was a really special moment in lempuyang's journey. Naturally I also asked him if he'd be up for recording a mix for the series. Martin is anything but prolific, and good things truly come to those who wait.
